What Is Electrocoating?
Electrocoating, or e-coat, is an immersion painting process that uses an electrical charge to apply an even, organic finish to electrically conductive parts. This advanced method combines precision with efficiency, coating every surface—including edges, corners, and recesses—with a low-profile film.

This process provides excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for demanding applications in automotive, military, aerospace, and other industries.
Our Upgraded EC-1 Electrocoat Line
Our largest electrocoat line, EC-1, has been fully rebuilt for cleaner, more consistent results. Tanks, conveyors, and the line shell are now stainless steel, eliminating the debris that causes coating defects and rework. A seven-stage pre-treatment washer — two cleaner stages and five rinse stages — cleans parts from the top, sides, and bottom, with filtered spray nozzles that keep coverage repeatable month after month. High-efficiency modulated boilers protect bath chemistry for more even coverage, and a new electro pulse rinse system completes the process. The result our customers see: better coverage, a smoother finish, and part-to-part consistency from the first piece in a lot to the last.
Anodic Ecoating
In anodic ecoating, the part is the anode with a positive electrical charge. It attracts the negatively charged paint particles in the paint bath. Small amounts of metal ions migrate into the paint film, limiting the performance properties of these systems. Their primary use is for products for interior or moderate exterior environments.
Cathodic Ecoating
In cathodic systems, like those at Giering Metal Finishing, the product is negatively charged, which attracts the positively charged paint particles. This reversed polarity greatly reduces the amount of iron entering the cured paint film, enhancing the properties of the cathodic ecoated products. Cathodic coatings are high performance, thermoset coatings with excellent corrosion resistance (ie. epoxy) and can be formulated for exterior durability (ie. acrylic).

Heat Exchangers: A Key E-Coat Application
Heat exchangers are one of the most demanding e-coat applications we handle. Their complex internal geometry — tight fin stacks, narrow tubes, internal fluid passages — makes uniform coverage with spray or dip methods nearly impossible. Electrocoating reaches every internal surface through electrodeposition, not line of sight, depositing a consistent, self-leveling film throughout the assembly. We coat heat exchangers for industrial, commercial, and military customers, including applications requiring ITAR-compliant processing and full quality documentation. For parts with outdoor UV exposure, a powder coat topcoat over the e-coat primer delivers both corrosion protection and UV stability.

Is there a minimum order for e-coating?
No. Our continuous conveyor line runs anywhere from one part to a million-plus, and quality is identical at any volume. Single prototypes and first articles are welcome.
How long does e-coating take?
It depends on your part’s incoming condition and specification. Clean parts can go straight onto the line and ship the same day; parts needing cleaning, rust removal, or conversion coatings take longer. Expedited services are available for hard deadlines.
What information do you need to quote my parts?
Part size, weight, and complexity; material; masking requirements; film thickness; and whether e-coat is the final finish or a primer. Drawings or sample parts speed things up.
How is e-coat quality verified?
Operators check film thickness, cure, and adhesion on the line; QC inspectors perform destructive testing; external labs handle salt spray and humidity testing when required; and we regularly verify our coating system with PPG.
Can you meet defense and military requirements?
Yes. We’re ITAR registered, our baths are approved to MIL-DTL-53084 / MIL-P-53084, and defense work includes retained samples, independent testing coordination, and 100% inspection before packaging.
What if I don’t know which finish my part needs?
We’ll consult with you. Depending on your performance requirements, e-coat may be the complete solution or the first coat in a multi-step system such as e-coat primer plus powder topcoat.
